Patton Oswalt’s improvised Parks And Recreation filibuster will make you wish he was writing Star Wars: Episode VII

In the first of two (count ’em, two!) new Parks And Recreation episodes airing this Thursday, friend of The A.V. Club (and once and future Webby host) Patton Oswalt joins in the proud Pawnee tradition of disrupting progress by speaking a steady stream of nonsense. Specifically, nonsense pertaining to J.J. Abrams’ forthcoming Star Wars sequel and its ability to incorporate the universe of another Disney-owned property (plus the public-domain pantheon of Greek gods). Those who’ve heard 2007’s Werewolves And Lollipops or read anything Oswalt has ever written on the Internet know the comedian can speak both expertly and hilariously on the subjects of Jedi, superheroes, and fantastical deities, so the Parks And Rec producers let him cut loose in the clip above, coming close to filibustering the shooting day with nine minutes of improvised rambling. He just might convince you that Star Wars: Episode VII is the perfect follow-up to that Avengers coda starring supervillain Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet. Short of that, it makes for a good argument that the federal government should consider filibuster reform before Rand Paul gets any bright ideas about derailing the gun-control debate with his pitch for Ghostbusters 3.
