With Heaven Adores You set to debut at the San Francisco International Film Festival next week, here’s the first look at Nickolas Rossi’s cinematic tribute to the life and work of Elliott Smith. According to the Kickstarter that made the film possible, Heaven Adores You isn’t a straightforward documentary about the late singer-songwriter—instead, it weaves together footage of Smith’s three adopted hometowns (Portland, New York, and Los Angeles) with interviews and performances from the likes of Jon Brion, Kill Rock Stars founder Slim Moon, and Smith’s sister Ashley. The trailer also contains a snippet of the Paul Thomas Anderson-directed oddity The Jon Brion Show, the YouTube upload of which you should absolutely watch after finishing the Heaven Adores You trailer, if only as a way to channel all of the feelings that are going to well up inside of you until Rossi’s film comes to your town. (Or, you know, you could watch the Pop Pilgrims episode about L.A.’s Soultions!, the site of the cover-photo shoot for Smith’s Figure 8. It’d mean a lot to the guy who hosted it.)
