There are those that say the worst part of The Grateful Dead is the band’s interminable jamming, that noodling around that causes fans to spin and drugs to kick in. But what about the wonky onstage tuning that comes before those epic jams? Atlanta-based artist Michael David Murphy sifted through dozens of Grateful Dead live recordings on the Internet Archive to come up with “Tuning ’77,” a 90-minute (Ninety. Goddamn. Minutes.) supercut of the band tuning its instruments while on tour in 1977. As Murphy told Good Day Sacramento (for whatever reason), “Tuning” is “kind of a conceptual art piece—an audio piece that’s really about the idea of what does sound sound like when no music is happening.” It’s also both insanely unlistenable and somewhat soothing.
