UPDATED: Seth Rogen and Silicon Valley’s Sonny Lee tackle the Singularity for FX

Seth Rogen is making a TV show about the Singularity, which will presumably feature some bong hits and dick jokes too, but will primarily be about Ray Kurzweil’s artificial intelligence theory. /Film picked up on the news after Rogen discussed it during a visit to Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist podcast. “It’s a half-hour comedy about the Singularity, basically,” Rogen said, declining to discuss it further. Rogen explained that he’s developing the pilot for FX. “We’re working on the script right now, and we’ll film that in the next year,” he noted. The “we” in all likelihood refers to Rogen and partner Evan Goldberg; the pair also developed AMC’s Preacher adaptation.

A comedy about the notion that we are approaching ”an era in which our intelligence will become increasingly nonbiological and trillions of times more powerful than it is today” sounds a bit more highbrow than one about talking food. But even Sausage Party—Rogen and Goldberg’s animated film out this weekend—gets into messy matters of religious ideology.

UPDATE: Since this post was published, Deadline has confirmed that FX has indeed ordered the pilot, which is in fact a collaboration between Rogen, Goldberg, and Sonny Lee, a writer whose credits include The Real O’Neals and Silicon Valley. Lee came up with the concept.
